How to remove some caulking & replacing in a tile shower wall?

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Feb 15, 2014First off using your knuckles, tap each tile lightly. Start up higher on the wall and work down. All the sounds should be solid sounding. If you start getting a ringing noise, or clicking sound, that tile is loose and has been compromised by moisture that has got behind the wall. If this is the case, you will need to remove the tiles and replace the damaged wall board behind them. If the tiles all sound solid then you simply need to scrape out the old grout and caulk and replace with new. They make several tools for this removal. Grout saws, which are simply a carbide cutter on a handle much like that of a screwdriver. You rub this back and fourth in the grout line to remove the old grout out. Another method which is what I use is a Dremel tool. That little grinder that you can purchase all sorts of cutting and grinding bits for. You can get a pretty decent one for around a $100. They make a special cutting disk for removal of grout. Its dusty and bit noisy, but this tool makes quick work of the grout removal. Once the old offending grout and caulk has been removed. Re grout with new. Use additives that help prevent mold and once dry seal will with new tile and grout sealer.Helpful Reply

IvandaVGV on Feb 17, 2014Good advice. I'm not a pro, but I'd also recommend using caulking rather than grout in all the "changes of plane" -- that is, the corners. Use 100% silicone caulk to help prevent future mold and mildew growth. My two cents (prob. all it's worth). -)Helpful Reply
