I don't know that turning it on its side is such a great idea unless you are going to reinforce the sides that will now be the top and bottom of the dresser. Traditionally, those are made of a thinner wood and wouldn't hold any sort of weight on top or for storage inside .
It can be done but depends on the quality and integrity of the original piece. I would enlist the assistance of a local cabinet maker or handyman. I would add bun feet, reorientate the drawers and install tracks to open the drawers or reinforce and make cubbies and use baskets for drawers.
Thanks, all.....my daughter told me it's made of pressed wood, so it won't be strong enough. If it was solid wood we wouldn't have a problem. So, I'm going to be on the lookout for a long dresser and make that into one for her. Thanks for answering, all of you! :)
