When doing any type of raised bed gardens such as cement block harder, always make sure you can reach across for weeding or harvesting. I prefer a long but skinny one vs a big square. You don't want to have to step into it to get to the center. But a U shipped one works good too. . It really depends on the space you have.
Here are a bunch of links for you! Now, some people say not to grow vegetables in these, some say to line with plastic, everyone has an opinion. I have made several of these over the years, so you decide for yourself. If you want other options just holler or Google!

have a fencearound a bird bath made out of concrete blocks the big one with 2 holes in each.stacked 2 high .have catus planted in them.doing very well.have some big white barrells that we cut intwo used the piece with the bottom out around the deck which is high off the ground and filled them with soil &planted tomatoes peppers &ect.iput a water hose on the deck with a spray nozel so my husband that is in a wheel chair can go out on deck& can water them.yap you guessed it the rest is on me.lol.dont get as many weeds and such if you put new soil in them.not much but it gives him something to do.
I just purchased a WONDERFUL! one from AMAZON -- actually I bought two and stacked them to get the height I wanted I'm 75 and they were a piece of cake to put together! LIFETIME Raised Gardening Bed
I am currently putting one in too!! Mine is a long thin rectangle so that I can reach every thing like Vicky described.
The other important factor is height. I am making mine 3 feet high so I can sit on the edge if needed and I won't have to bend too far.
My husband plumbed a line into one end of my bed so a drip irrigation system can be installed. I live in the desert so watering is mainly done by me.
Its also important for the block to be sitting on a cement footer with rebar so that it lasts and doesn't start falling over.
I am excited for you to get back to gardening! It's a beautiful way to spend your time!
