I used Behr paint and primer eggshell enamel when I first painted my brick 20 years ago. I just repainted it with paint that already had the primer in it because over time the paint had yellowed and looked odd with my newly painted warm white bookcases. Again I used Behr only in satin enamel. I wanted an opaque look not white wash, but if you want a white wash effect, thin the paint with water before applying. Happy painting!
that depends on the look you are trying to get
Brick & Tile if you want shiney surface - Masonry Paint if you want lasting cover. or Emulsion if it's internal will do the job. But be aware you will need to seal the bricks otherwise the paint will seep into brick, although I quite like that effect.
You can use latex paint too, http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/skills-and-know-how/painting/how-to-paint-a-brick-fireplace
