Ive used it on regular furniture with no problem so it should work on trim/ moulding. try it on a pc in a closet first.

In a nutshell, it's best not to due to bleed through ... there should be some sanding, primer, and then painting ;)

Chalk paint works over stained and varnished surfaces. In fact it is preferable at times, especially when the stain color is darker than the chalk paint The varnish prevents that darker stain color from bleeding through and into the chalk paint.
Here is a link on prepping prior to using chalk paint. It mentions furniture; however, the info can be applied to any surface including crown molding.

yes. just be sure to clean it good before painting.
Yes, clean it and then sand paper to give a rough surface, clean again the paint giving it a wash coat, let that dry then a good finish coat, good to go :)
