From unfinished wood crates and unfinished work bench to, TA-DA, beautiful BBQ Grill Station
Unfinished workbench. Bottom shelf lifts off, and legs fold underneath for easy storage on end during winter months here in Michigan. The bench top and shelf top are MDF board (pressed wood) but the rest of the bench is solid wood, very sturdy and strong. I sanded everything down with 220 sand paper, wiped down and applied Gel stain to all wood parts. Lightly sanded again. On the bench top and shelf top stain will not work on the MDF, so I primed with 3 coats of primer allowing for drying time in between and lightly sanded in between each step.
Then applied 2 coats of white paint.
One last light sanding, wiped all down. Then applied 3 coats of gloss polyurethane on ALL surfaces including bench and shelf tops. Allowing for drying between each step. This project will be on a covered deck but because it is not pressure treated wood I wanted to give it as much protection I could from the elements. It will be stored inside during winter weather.

Unfinished wooden crates, of which I purchased three. With sale and coupons I purchased all three for less than $24.00

This is during it's last drying and while I was sanding, staining and polyurethaning the three crates that will fit perfectly on the bottom shelf to hold wood chips or charcoal and other bbq items.

Decided that we needed something to place hot items on, so purchased a 12x12 inch ceramic tile for $1.28 added self adhesive felt circles to bottom and that is with pepper mill on it for display purposes. It's now time to carry it up to our deck and put it into use.

Here it is. Photo a little dark, but hopefully you can see the paper towel holder I added to the end and maybe you can just make out the bottle cap remover on the right front corner. I think it fits right in on the back deck of our log home.
What do you think?
