Hello Jessica! Here is very thorough information on how to go about decluttering! Scroll down to the "three box" idea -- I have used this particular idea in the past and it worked well for me. Also, be sure to stick to the "one room at a time" method, which kept me on track. Good luck and good luck with your move!

When I'm helping clients do this,

    1. First see what you don't want to keep, then either donate it to Goodwill or if in poor shape, take it to the dump.

    2. Have 4 boxes, recycle, donate, keep and give to a friend, as you sort through closets, cupboards, drawers etc. put the items in the appropriate box. Make weekly runs to the Goodwill drive-thru, the recycling center, and drop off items to friends.

    3. Have some boxes for packing, I usually go to the food store and try to get apple boxes and other fruit boxes.. real sturdy and have handles. Have some magic markers, and tape.

    4. Start packing what you don't need right now i.e. winter clothes, seasonal items, extra bedding and towels. Be sure to pack items by room, label on 2 sides.

    5. I also like to be cleaning everything being packed. Wash all the clothes.

    6. Figure out where to put the boxes? an extra bedroom, stacking against the wall. Rent a storage unit? take to storage on your trips to make donations. Schedule your phone service, internet service and any TV service ahead of time.

    7. Are you taking your trailer with you? are your renting a U-Haul truck, or having a mover. Reserve your truck or mover ahead of time.

    8. Clean the trailer as you go, so there is no huge cleaning job at the end.

    9. If your just moving into town, I always recommend if you can, renting your new place a month before your move. This way you can move boxes in ahead of time, get some things set up, paint if need be, hang curtains and extra clothes, and then just worry about the furniture on moving day.

    10. Go grocery shopping and put a few items in the frig for moving day, like a TV dinner and a snack, and cold drinks for who is helping you move.

    11. If friends are helping you move, be sure to get cold drinks and sandwiches made for them, or a pizza.

    12. In unpacking I always set up the bed first, Unpack the toliet paper and towel, shampoo and soap from the shopping bag I had in the car and bring in the overnight bag I packed for the next day and my jammies.

    I've moved over 30 times.

start with your clothes. Try them on. If it fits and has no holes, keep. Don't fit, donate, needs much repair...make rags. If you haven't used it in 3 years...you probably don't need it. Then move to the kitchen. Take out the pots and pans set a pile that you use regularly, evaluate the rest...how often do you make a bunt cake....make cookies corn bread. Keep the stuff you use frequently. Barrow the other or get foil pans. Evaluate the dishes....all in good condition? How many peeps does your table seat? Casual dining or hoards at holidays? Formal dinners? Keep what you need for the events or go paper plates and plastic.

That should get get you started. Now for the rest...is it worth paying to have it moved? That's the question I've asked when moving. You might not have pros come in, but you will spend gas money. Donate what you don't take with you.

Go through one item at a time and ask yourself if it brings you joy, if not get rid of it.

Start by throwing out everything you have that is broken and you are not going to be bothered to fix. Old Papers, Books and thing you will never read again and general rubbish. From Four Piles: One to Bin - One to Keep - One to Give away - and one to ? Do that with every area of your Home. Throw away the Pile for the Bin - Give away the Pile to Re-cycle - Now already your getting somewhere! Put away or Pack the stuff to Keep. ( Now that only leaves you with the Pile your not sure about) Ok! time to make your mind up!! This time it's only 3 Piles - Keep - Bin - Recycle or give away!!!

Once you have gone through the (? ) Pile and made your choices you will feel a

Lightness of Mind and Job well done........

Oh geeze do I know how you feel. I had a 9 room old farmhouse that I lived in for 30 years and after my husband died (who had a lot of tools and was a packrat) I moved into a 2 bdrm. apartment. Just do a little at a time and put ads in the paper and you'd be surprised what people will take for free if you put them out by the curb. Also, have a walk-through and let people come in and look for themselves.
