We have a living area that was originally a garage converted to a living space. The ceiling is at least a foot lower than the rest of the house And covered in ceiling 12x12 tiles. The floor is a faux dark wood slatted tile. The room is a buckskin tan color. Desperately want to lighten the room. Not sure how to prep and paint the old school ceiling tiles and then best color to bring light to the area. Windows at each end of the the oblong area.

We had good luck painting ceiling tiles with 'Kilz' brand paint/primer in one. We just used a thick napped paint roller on the end of a painter's extension wand. If you really want to have it appear that there is more light, you could also strategically place a few large mirrors on the walls between the two windows. That way you can bounce your natural light throughout the room.

Hope this helps, good luck! 😉

Thank you. Appreciate the suggestion. We will use Kilz. Never thought of chnaging the knap of the roller. Thank you again!

White is the best color to lighten your room. Maybe a Satin finish so that it reflects light better than flat paint will.

Danielle's idea for mirrors sounds like a really good plan too!

Using a satin finish soft cream should reflect light down. also consider using some lights which point to the ceiling or reflect light up. I've seen these used very successfully behind furniture or beside it.
