😳STOP!!! Plumbing sounds easy. Glue some pipes together, poop rolls down hill, payday is on Friday, etc. But those of us who have attempted doing our own plumbing have horror...
Actually the horror stories are funny as heck later on and in the end, we learn how to make water and waste move where we want it!
You can do this but be prepared for a funny story to tell!
I am assuming you have a hose that screws onto a pipe coming out of your wall and runs to your toilet. Turn off your main valve outside. To avoid a funny story, turn on your bathroom sink. Is water coming out? If it is, you need a plumber because your main shut off valve isn't working.
If no water, then you can remove the hose from your wall fitting. Tape the hose on the wall fitting side for later reference. Remove the other end from the toilet. Take the hose(s) with you to store.
Now this is important. Tell your Home Improvement Store helper that you need a gate valve that fits the threads of the hose in your hand. The male AND female threads must match that hose. A gate valve has a handle that is long and moves in a 1/4 turn. Not the knob or little butterfly wing valves. They leak by in no time.
Once you have your valves and some teflon tape, you are ready for your first plumbing job!
Using teflon tape. you wrap the tape around the wall pipe threads (in a clockwise direction) that you have wiped off. Two times around will do the job.
Now screw on your shiny new valve by hand as tight as you can. Use a cloth to cover valve and use Crescent Wrench or plit's over cloth to turn valve so that it is sitting up right. (If it feels real loose, make another complete turn.
Put a container under Closed valve (Both bathrooms) and turn on water in bathroom sink to release air. Turn on main water valve and Check for leaks. This could be a funny story later on! You may need to shut off water and tighten valves a little further . Once there are no leaks, put hose onto valve and toilet and open valve, checking for leaks at valve and toilet.
Congradulatins! You have completed your first plumbing job! I hope the funny stories are few or at least a good learning experience!
: )
Oh my! That would never have passed inspection where I live. Here is how you fix it. These links will help you out. You can do this!

I tried to move a video from You Tube that shows a gate valve being installed on both the hot and cold water lines. The gate valves were red and one hand wide. I typed in: How to Install Shut Off Valve on Bathroom Sink. Don't be afraid to read good posts and watch several videos. Once you learn how, try to install these in-house valves for every sink. You probably won't be able to get to tubs and showers. Best wishes 😇
