Carol, Good Morning :) The BEST way to keep moths away from your home and your clothes is LAVENDER BUDS sewn into bags of lightweight material (like gauze) and hung among yor clothes, placed in your drawers etc. (Now I realize why my granny always smelled so wnderful) :) Lemon does not work, eucalyptus does not work, bay leaves and mint do not work. Cinnamon and cloves DO work but then you smell like the holidays and the scent IS hard to remove. Cedar works too but you run the risk of cedar oil getting on your clothes and that isn't good. So, your best bet is lavender buds. Thanks for coming to Hometalk for answers ;)
Moth balls.
Good old moth balls, lemon or lavender scented pouches you can get from the dollar stores.
First you need to find their entry point and seal that off. Keep a vacuum handy, hoover them up as soon as you see them. I use lavender in my closets and bay leaves everywhere else. Here is a link with other suggestions.

This sounds like a really bad moth infestation! I don't think that you will be able to rid your home of them on your own as it involves cleaning all clothing, carpeting, pantry cans/jars, etc. Given that they have literally eaten your carpet, this means that it is infested with moth larvae (moths don't have mouths, it's the larvae that destruct!) You would need to scrub the carpet with a vinegar solution after thorough vacuuming (remove the bag each step of the way and seal it outdoors). Once clothing, etc. is cleaned and stored elsewhere, you will have to scrub down all nooks and crannies, baseboards, door frames, etc. with vinegar.
You could rent portable industrial heaters to raise the temp in the house above 120* to kill the moths and larvae.

In your case, I do think it's best to call an exterminator.

"If moths reappear after you've taken these measures, they may be laying eggs in the walls or other place you can't get to with a sponge. Make an appointment with an exterminator, who will use heavy-duty products to get rid of the problem."

Hope this helps.
Anything that can go into the freezer to kill them will help. Use bug bomb. Use aerosol spray. Don't leave doors open. Don't burn outdoor lights at night. Eliminmate craft goods. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Replace carpet with tile or wood. Clean, clean, clean. If your vacuum uses bags, throw them away tied in plastic bags each time. I feel your pain.
Sometimes they come in with pet food.
Maybe this could help too.
