IT depends on what the stains are made from... in the case of red wine...white wine can do the trick. There are also many cleaners on the market that will not lighten your red carpet. Just read the labels. I have found some great cleaners at the automotive store. They are made to clean carpet in your car and not to damage the upholstery. Good luck!
Wet a clean rag (damp wet only), plug your steam iron until it becomes hot, then place the wet rag over the stain and put the steam iron on top of the wet rag for a couple of minutes to lift the stain. Caution: Do NOT leave the iron on top of the wet rag too long, it might burn your carpet!
I agree with the damp rag and steam iron method. It's a really cool way to lift stains!
