Use a regular latex house paint. Depending on the look you want, you can either paint the fireplace directly with the paint, using full strength paint....or you can thin the paint slightly and brush it on more lightly for a white-washed effect. Use water-based paint for best results.
Hello Gordon, Before painting, you should clean the fireplace. You could use a wire brush to help clean it. I suggest talking to someone who is a paint professional. I think there is a paint actually manufactured for this exact purpose. Best of luck.
