Depends on what type of Hanging light it is? Would be a shame to paint over stained glass. Have you thought of using it in the garden and buying or making something else for the light?
I had a Tiffany knockoff that had colours that clashed with my dining area. I bought Gallery Glass paints and went over the squares that clashed, and it worked beautifully and held up well.
