If you just want to replace the railing, here is a link below of some creative ideas, I especially like the idea of using piping to create an industrial look, I have worked with piping to create industrial shelves, and it is surprisingly easy to work with. But you could easily paint it too. I plan on just painting my railing going down to the basement. If you use something like chalk paint, mineral fusion or milk paint, you don't need to sand it, just paint it.

Do you want to remove or replace? If keeping, strip and paint either the same color as your walls or a complimentary color to go with your decor. Here is a link for stair spindle suggestions.

I would paint the wood railing in the same color as the walls or a shade darker if you need contrast in the room.
