are you painting the inside fireplace bricks or outside chimney bricks? I would say a good acrylic would work for either but you will prob not want a glossy finish - unless the rest of the house around it is a gloss finish. If you have siding and are doing the chimney I would use a semi-gloss as it tends to last longer in the elements.
If your chimney is used only occasionally, like for a fireplace or a water heater, virtually any latex-based paint and primer will do. If it is used extensively, like for a furnace or a wood-heated stove, then a high temperature paint is the only alternative.
Just remember - the fireplace needs to be really clean first! My chimney repair man says to use TSP. And bricks are porous so will use a lot of paint to cover.
