Best top surface for a DIY kitchen island?

I had a light bulb moment and realized our coffee table would be the perfect size for a kitchen island. New taller table legs would be an easy fix. But what to do about the top surface to make it durable enough for everyday kitchen use? What about germs?

You can always add a wood top so it keeps the form of a custom piece of furniture but does not try to unsuccessfully match the other counter-tops.

You could get a piece of butch block a tad larger than the top so you would have a bit of a overhang (about 4"). You can pick up a sealer for butcher block at the big box store. I do not use mine as a cutting board and I wipe it down almost daily with Clorox Kitchen Spray to keep it clean. I LOVE my butcher block. I keep a wooden cutting board to use as a place to sit hot things down, but use plastic cutting boards because they are not porous! If you want to have an eating bar, make the overhang on one side deeper and add a couple of braces. Attach it from the underside with screws.
  • If the top of the coffee table works, then just buy some food grade polyurethane for the top {should be food grade if you are going to do food on it}. As far as germs, I always have a spray bottle of cleaner handy and i spray my counters and wipe down with a rag several times a day and I always change my rags every morning and sometimes if my family makes a lot of messes, twice a day. I find it easier to have a spray bottle of spic and span or cleaner of your choice handy because a wet rag and spray cleaner are easier to use and more economical than paper towels. As Jeannette states, plastic cutting boards are better because they are not porous and you can run them through the dishwasher (i have several types). Now, if you find the top boring on the coffee table, you could paint it and then treat it with the poly or even tile it but grout can be work and maintenance. You may just want to keep the top so that it looks like a custom piece. any decision, makes it yours. Good luck!
