Consider it may be 'critter pee'.

I would mulch and water well. Remove the dead, the live petunias will probably multiply and fill the tub before fall freeze

anything is possible, even a insect that decided to attack one plant
There are animals galore where I live. Looks just like on would if it was peed upon. Racoons, possums, deer, even dogs & cats could be to blame. Takes 2-3 days to dye like that. Dig up the soil, shake out plant, put in new soil with plant & should return to normal within a week.
Looks like my pot that didn't get enough water in the hot sun but if you watered it the same as the others, that can't be the reason. I have used systemic bug killer.....granuals that you work into the soil and water thoroughly.....systemic granduals go up the roots to the plant and any chewing or sucking insect will be killed....I do this to all my house plants before bringing them inside.
Oh, you might try some miracle grow fertizer on your plant after you have cleaned it up and watered it.
Thanks, all! All wonderfully helpful suggestions!
Based on what I can see your soil is very dry and is probably repelling water because it looks compacted. You need to keep your water up but before planting I would suggest you remove and replace at least half of the soil with fresh potting mix.
possibly unlikely that will grow but give it a go. I would replace all the soil and you can buy a product that stores water like a gel (just can't think what it called right now). If you water it and the water just runs off then that is an issue, you may also have a mixture that doesn't retain moisture and that is where compost etc will help but these plants usually are only seasonal. Chances are they were at end of their life.
