What is on there now?
I am constantly updating my mantle - change around for different holidays or the season. Shop your own house first and try with things you already own before heading out and spending money. Here are a few links for inspiration! Just Google or poke around on Pinterest for more ideas. Have fun!

Why not decorate with something you can change for the seasons? A cloth, candles, and maybe a couple vases could be altered for each holiday. For example the lace cloth could be replaced with quilt batting at Christmas and a village placed on it, the vases could hold seasonal flowers (even silk) for example for fall the mum is very popular and vogue, for fall the candles could be fall colors, even the candleholders could change, find one object to place on the mantle center with each season or holiday like a metalic pumpkin or horn of plenty in fall. You know what you like. We have a western scene with cowboy on horse, windmill, and candles and plant. At Christmas we remove the plant and change the candle colors, and decorate with quilt batting for snow and lights and greenery. Make the mantle express your loves and hobbies. Hope this helps.
I'm like Naomie, I constantly re-do my mantelpiece. In fact plan on doing it today with part of my china dog collection. The thing is mantelpieces differ greatly and an arrangement that might look good in one home would not in another. Also somewhat mantelpieces reflect the area/climate of the home. And of course decorating tastes differ. If you post a picture of your mantel, it would be easier to give advice. Just in general, this is a very transient and easy decorating task, it can be loads of fun. But like anything else the more decorative items you have the more choices you can make. My advice . . . if you have the room is to start collecting things you like . . . they can be free (seashells, pine cones, feathers, leaves, flowers, stones, they can be in your house already, plates, small pieces of art, like paintings, sculptures, just about anything that is small enough and that appeals to you.
