I have seen where 2 inch slats from wood or faux wood blinds were used in making a backsplash in a kitchen. The results were amazing. These blinds can be picked up reasonably at thrift shops or on Kijiji and would be perfect for your project. The range of how you could finish them is extensive. Good luck.

This would give you the idea on dismantling builder grade steps. Then you could cover with shiplap.....
