Hello Mv; What a Lovely chair!!! Your chair has Excellent bones, and appears to be an Antique.

I Love the old fabric. Couldn't you use a throw, and use the chair as is, or??

I have a similar chair, and I have not attempted to take it apart, to try and redo, as my skills, at redoing fabric are not good enough to attempt!

What I have done with my chair, is to use a large throw, and several pillows, that compliment it.

I have had many people compliment me on the chair, as it is different.

In my book, different is always a plus.

I hope that I have been able to give you some ideas for your Lovely chair!!

    Take Care!

Hello Victoria; Thank-You so much for the correct name of the chair!!

Yes, that is why I have not attempted to redo mine, and I just have a throw and some pillows on it.

      Thank-You again!! Take Care!

The scalloped back wouldn't work terribly well with a standard slipcover. What about fabric paint? There's a helpful DIY blog entry here, complete with lots of pictures: http://www.thekimsixfix.com/2014/05/how-to-paint-upholstery-latex-paint-and.html

Paint it, by adding fabric medium to acrylic paint you will be ankle to make it any color you like.

Find some fabulous fabric..... in your style... traditional, eklectic, contemporary, modern, etc.

What kind of fabric do you want.... another damask? floral, leaves, basketweave, etc.

What kind of fiber.... cotton, linen, silk, etc.

Got a picture of your living room?

      Thank you!

So the fabric was pretty stiff to begin with, like office furniture. It now feels like almost leathery or like outside canvas. Is it butter soft, no....but can someone sit in there and be comfortable? Absolutely!

The fabric medium is what keeps the paint soft. I used Martha Stewart's and mixed 1-1 ratio. 1 part paint to 1 part medium. I used a water bottle to wet the fabric first, this assists with the paint not running when applied and absorbing. After each coat, I used ultra fine sandpaper and sanded in between coats. I was covering burgundy so it took a lot of coats but I had the rainbow of color options using interior latex. I also used eggshell.

Believe me, I got lots of crazy stares from my neighbors until they saw the end result!

Here is my take, these chairs were destined for garbage so I had nothing to lose BUT if your chair is a family heirloom and you want to continue the tradition, you may want to check out getting it upholstered......

Please let me know if you have any other questions and good luck! I am sure it will turn out amazing whatever you choose :)

I like the first poster's idea. If the upholstery is in decent shape (and it looks like it is), I would go with the first suggestion of adding a throw and pillows that complement the color of the chair and bring it in line with your grey, white and green color scheme. (It's hard to tell exactly what color(s) the chair is, so I don't have any specific color suggestions.)

If you're thinking about reupholstering or using fabric paint or something similarly drastic, you might want to consider getting the chair appraised first. It may or may not be a valuable antique, but I would want to know before I possibly destroyed the value. Yes, there might be a fee associated with appraisal. It's a gamble. Still, I'd either go the route of just adding a thrown and/or pillows until I could afford to get the chair appraised.

Thank you for your suggestions. The upholstery is gold, but someone left it out in the rain and it has some rather extensive water stains. Other than that it is in pretty good shape. Do you how i would go about finding out about its value as an antique? I don't really know it's history since I bought it from a shop at a very reduced price since it was water stained. Thanks for your input.

White and grey are neutral colours so a gold chair would still work and you can add a white and grey pillow or throw. The chair looks post war and they were mass produced so it would not be of great value, and having it reupholstered would likely be cost prohibitive, I would not paint the woodwork or fabric, if you cant live with the dark stain, you could carefully sand and stain a lighter colour. I would recommend if you have a Servpro or other water damage company in your area or upholstery cleaners that specialize in cleaning water damaged furniture to give them a call.

You are so Welcome, Mv. I am basing my information on how your chair looks. Anything over fifty years old is considered to be an Antique.

(My chair, which looks so similar to yours is over fifty years old!)

As I can not see the chair in person, I could be incorrect.

However, if you decide to take the chair to a class, or to an upholster they could be more certain of the age.

You hit the nail on the head......I have not tried to redo mine, as I am afraid that I would ruin it!!!

I hope that this helps you!!! Your chair is Beautiful. Enjoy it!! Take Care!
