Uneven Floor

Our den is the former carport/garage with a concrete floor with about a 3" slope from one side to the other. This is especially noticeable along the fireplace hearth. We plan to replace the carpet with wood flooring. What should we do about the slope?

  • You will need to install sleepers with a vapor barrier under them. Garage floors typically do not have any vapor barrier installed and any wood floor if its in direct contact with the cement or even placed on sleepers over the cement will warp due to moisture wicking up from the cement below. You would cut these boards like a wedge so you end up with a level floor once done. Its tricky to lay it out, but once you figure out how you can move right along. Be sure to use treated lumber and place the boards on a foam insulation material that is used for sealing sills. Although treated you do not want any wood to come into contact with cement, or have it laid directly onto the plastic barrier as it will damage it.
  • Also, spend a few extra bucks and use engineered wood flooring. It will hold up a bit better to any latent moisture
