Depending on your decor you can whitewash it or paint is with a color that matches your decor

White wash it or paint it if you don't want to cover it.

PAINT THEBRICK WHITE OR YOU COULD FIND THE COLOR BRICK IN HOME DEPOT OR LOWES I DID MINE SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND I DIDN'T DO ALL THE BRICK LEFT SOME NATURAL
If the fireplace is brick, try a whitewashing on the bricks to tone down. Use Tiles and tile the fireplace if it isn't brick, the possibilities are endless.
Whitewashing would look great.
