The Garden Frog with C Renee on Feb 19, 2014Check out Youtube if you prefer to watch a video than read. There are also many people who give tutorials on here and Pinterest. It is not hard just paint, sand, and wax (basically).Helpful Reply

Shari on Feb 19, 2014I've never actually used commercially made chalk paint, only a homemade version and I was not impressed. At any rate, as Renee mentioned, there is an abundance of tutorials all over HomeTalk and the internet in general as it seems everyone is using chalk paint these days. Even the chalk paint stockists usually have a Frequently Asked Questions section on their websites with tips and tricks. One thing I have read about chalk paint is if you want heavy distressing, sand then wax. If you want a more minimal, natural distressed look, sand AFTER waxing. Also, as Renee said, it is not really too difficult to mess up because chalk paint produces a more casual, imperfect finish that often shows brush strokes rather than a fine finish like you would find on professionally painted furniture. I think this is one of the reasons I'm not too fond of using it (or milk paint) on furniture in my home--it's just a little bit too imperfect for my borderline obsessive compulsive perfectionistic tendencies. lol. I actually have 1 piece I painted with homemade chalk paint and 1 piece I painted with milk paint and I want to repaint them both in traditional latex paint because I'm just not happy with the chalk paint and milk paint finishes. The waxing can be a bit tricky sometimes, especially over dark colors like black (and depending on which brand wax you use) so you might want to spend a little extra time searching and reading up on waxing techniques.Helpful Reply
