Possibilities for concrete blocks

Rachel
by Rachel
Hello All! I have old style concrete blocks surrounding my carport and surrounding my front entrance way similar to a courtyard. They are white and constantly are growing mold and cobwebs in the many cut-outs. They do provide structure for the carport, and a sitting bench for the front entrance. Any ideas to help them look better would be appreciated.

Really love the block! These are so cute! Have you tried pressure washing them? I believe you can rent a pressure washer or even purchase them! That would be my suggestion that requires the least amount of effort, haha

I like them as is, I'm afraid.

You can clean them with a power washer or bucket/brush with a bleach solution.

Consider repainting them with an algae-resistant paint (the hardware or paint store can advise you about the best choice for your area).

Web-building spiders construct webs in calm, undisturbed places to capture their food. They live in or near their web and wait for food to come to them. They generally have poor eyesight and rely on sensing vibrations in their web to detect prey.

Remove piles of bricks, firewood, and other debris that may serve as suitable homes for spiders or move them further from your home.

Keep grassy or weedy areas near buildings cut short.

Trim back shrubs and other plants that directly contact your home.

Periodically remove webs with a broom, vacuum, or a hard spray of water.

Remove and destroy any egg sacs or spiders that are found.

Check to be sure screens fit tightly. Replace any screens that fit poorly or are damaged.

Reduce outside lighting to minimize attraction of insect prey that can encourage spiders. Yellow bug lights are less attractive to insects than mercury or sodium vapor lights. When possible, place security lights on a pole shining toward a door rather than on the building above the door. This will reduce attracting insects that spiders feed on to the building.

Caulk or seal cracks or gaps around the foundation, doors, and ground level windows.

As a last resort, lightly apply a broad-spectrum insecticide labeled for the exterior of buildings on the outside of your home to reduce invasion by wandering spiders. Spray under siding, in cracks and crevices, and other places where spiders may hide. General treatments on the siding or other surfaces are not effective. Read and follow all pesticide label directions.

What type of house is your home made of siding brick, I'm thinking box it in the thin ply wood and add siding to match your home, I've seen this done a few blocks from me. That would drive me nut all those spiders. I live on an island and everyday I has webs.

Wet 'n Forget, a product you mix with water and apply with a pump sprayer, will work to stop algae/mildew. I would not use a power washe, Just a garden hose and a sweeper nozzle. You don't want to damage the decorative blocks. To get rid of webs, a shop vac or an air blower.

What I would give to have that beautiful block right now! If you're going to keep it, I would go with the suggestions above, wet 'n forget, or some kind of spray nozzle that won't beat the blocks down. They are gorgeous! If you ever want to get rid of them.... :)

Try spraying with bleach using a gallon garden/weed sprayer. Let sit in the sun for a little while - ok if it dries- then rinse off with a garden hose. Love the bricks! Have sympathy for the problem with mold and spiders. I live in Louisiana, and they're always a problem. I've heard walnut oil will discourage spiders. Good luck!
