How to get rid of grass in a flower bed without killing the plants
Hi I would like to know how to kill grass in flower beds without harming the plants. The plants are perennial and the grass is pasture.
my grandmother told me to use vinagar i have used it and it does kill the grass but didnt hurt the flowers next to the grass
It would be in your best interest not to use vinegar or weed killers. Smother the grass out with newspapers and cardboard
Round up
I have tried both vinegar and roundup. I have dogwoods and other small trees and the roundup poses a threat to them.
weve been dealing with this for several years in one part of our flower bed. What works great and for the full season is to lay cardboard down as a weed barrier and then mulch on top. Doing this in the spring right when your perennials begin to sprout works best so you can lay the cardboard around them.
It is a little bothersome when planting a new plant but you just push the mulch aside and cut the cardboard with a razor knife where you will be digging the hole for the new plant.
We have tried EVERYTHING and this works great. No weeds or grass ALL season. And believe it or not the following year when you go to replace your mulch there are NO signs of the cardboard at all. It completely deteriorates. It's a great way to recycle too!!!
I currently have cardboard down and a plastic tarp over part of the weeds. I have not check it yet. Thanks you for advice. I will wait until spring I guess
I use Round Up because it is easy and I need easy....I'm old and can't bend down too well. I only spray the weed and do not over use the killer.....
If they are in the flower bed I would pull them by hand. Using chemicals may kill your flowers.
As long as you stay a foot or two away no reason you can't spray with vinegar. You are only srpaying the weeds stems not soaking the ground to get to the roots.
