I just read about this because it was happening to ours too. It's from a burst of water like a heavy rain or a lot of rain. The tomato is growing faster on the inside than the skin is which causing it to split. They're perfectly fine to eat.
sometimes it is too much water.
The water is the issue with tomatoes. It reminds me of watermelons, tho'. With watermelons, you want to pick those who actually have the brown streaks, and the "bottom" being very light. The brown is a result of bees on the blooms.....the more the bees, the more the streaks, the sweeter the melons. I bought a watermelon last week that was full of the streaks, and my friend who was with me told me it would be bad. I got it home, and we cracked it open, and it has been the sweetest melon I've had in a long time. The tomatoes with the cracks and streaks are definitely edible, and usually delicious, just trim the cracks out slightly, and sprinkle a little salt on 'em, and chow down!
