Hi Babs, Without a picture of you stool it's hard to give you advise. Have you looked at Wayfare.com ? They have a huge selection of bar stools and maybe you could find one like yours there!

    Good luck!

If I were you, I'd buy two plain padded stools (without backs) then place them (staggered) between the ones that have backs so that it looks "planned". Try and buy stools with seat covers that tie in with your other colors. If the legs are light wood and DON'T match those of the highbacks, I'd sand and stain them so all the legs match as you want some consistency.

I hope this makes sense! It's a bit difficult to explain via typing. In other words, the seats AND style don't have to match but I'd ensure the color of the legs DO match to tie it all in. Hopefully, you can find stools with a green, gray or white that picks up your existing stools. Remember that it's perfectly okay to mix patterns as long as the colors relate to each other.

To now thoroughly confuse you, IF your highbacks are older and the seat covers worn or discolored, then I'd buy enough fabric for ALL the seats and still match the color of the legs. Be sure to still stagger the highback chairs (a) and the stools (b) .... so at the counter, you have .... a, b, a, b, a.

One final note: if you find plain, dark wood stools that are NOT upholstered, they would look great too. The ones I'm referring to are a bit Oriental looking in shape ... i.e. plain wood, no padded seat but the seats are a bit concave. I think Pier 1 carries them and they suit Traditional interiors. I have a friend with a similar issue and her kitchen looks great and VERY stylish!

Try to match the wood color - you’ll never match the upholstery. Or go for a completely different look and use white or grey.

Look for Second hand Stools at a Charity/Thrift Shop or Website or Market etc. You might be able to find something at a good price.

Go for plain wood stools in a wood color to match the ones you aready have. I know the ones Elaine referred to, and agree they are stylish. If your counter has more than one side, you could place the different ones on the other side.

Find two in the same wood tone from thrift store or Christmas tree shop, hobby lobby or Walmart and recover all the chairs together or pick a coordimaging fabric the matches your current chairs to the new stools. Be sure to use cell phone to snap photo of current stool fabric to bring to any fabric stores.
