Furniture makeover

I have a sturdy, but unattractive wooden desk with wood grain Formica top that needs your help. I am trying to pull together this piece with a black futon, a tall, narrow IKEA storage piece in black wood and a rattan dark brown etagere. I will paint and change the flooring and window treatments when I have an idea of how I can pull this off! Thank you.

Perhaps you could do the cabinet using PolyShades classic black. Also consider a faux finish for the top of the cabinet with a marbleizing kit from a craft store such as Michael's. The finish would fit in with your other black furnishings and still allow the wood grain to show thru. If the wood grain effect is not what you want then a black paint for the main part of the desk would work best. I suggest then you go with the black cabinet paint by Nuvo paints at the Giani Store: http://www.gianiproducts.com/nuvo-cabinet-paint/ to give you a very smooth and durable finish.

Thank you Pat. Is that a stain and would I have to prep the desk? I like the faux finish idea. I have used that process before on my bathroom walls and it's a good idea.

Thanks for the sample photos also. Should I paint the rattan etagere too?

There's no stripping or heavy sanding necessary to remove the old finish! Simply give it a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper, remove sanding dust, and brush on a coat of PolyShades. A wet/dry 600 grit sandpaper is sufficient. This is a polyurethane finish with the stain incorporated in it. It is just like adding another coat of poly and just enough sanding is required to lightly dull the existing finish.

Thank you. Do you recommend I paint the rattan etagere black as well?

Black spray paint transforms natural wicker from country to contemporary. You must then decide if painting it black would most compliment your room.

I was also thinking maybe painting it something very light and doing dark walls because there might be too much black.

A great way to update it abit is take the skirt off the bottom and put nice feet on it. I just saw one done and you wouldn't believe the difference. She had painted it a light sage green and modern handles. Good luck.
