Is this an existing garden or a new one?

Apparently there is a debate happening on this subject. Here's a place where you can start reading to help you decide where you stand:

Yes, if you want exercise. It is a great idea.

Are you asking about putting tiles down? or tilling as in turning the earth?

  • A subject of much debate for sure. I think it all depends upon the soil in your garden. My original soil - let't call it dirt - no nutritional value whatsoever and anything you would want to plant would die. So for me, clearing the yard of random weeds, tilling and adding literally a ton of compost, now I had something to work with. If you are not sure about your soil, you can always have it tested. If your curent plants are thriving, I would be less concerned. If things seem lackluster, then it might be time to consider tilling and adding some compost to boost the nutritional value of your soil.

Tilling helps the soil. It is good to till it in the fall after the garden is done producing to add the vegetation back into the soil and aerate it. Till it again in the spring before planting. You don't need to go deep. The average tiller goes plenty deep to turn over the soil.
