One small piece has separated, but not broken off. What is best way to reattach to make it blend back in. Should I use yellow glue or an epoxy, and then coat with varnish?

I would glue it back into place with a glue that dries clear. Sometimes, I tape one side of something until the glue dries for the other side and then I reverse the process. Use a tape that won't leave residue like painter's tape if you use that method.

Try wood glue that dries clear

Start by lightly sanding the piece that separated, just a quick buff. You need wood glue to put this together, and you shouldn't need varnish. Try to put some kind of clamp to hold it in place, and leave it over night. Good Luck!

Thanks to all who responded. I finally decided to use contact cement, with it clamping is unnecessary, and it dries the same color as the cane.
