Front lawn-how can I soften the soil to set stones and succulents?

During the drought I took all my lawn off and now is only very dry clay soil.
My question is how can I soften the soil to set stones and succulents.

Put the sprinkler to work.
I would put down landscape fabric first so you aren't dealing with tons of weeds, then put your rock down. Cut an X where you want to plant a succulent,
I would also put some sandy soil down so they can get hold.
Wet the area that you will be digging in. I have the same clay soil and I find I have to keep wetting the area as I dig in it. When planting your succulents dig out a big enough hole to allow for soil to go in so the plants have a better start. You just need to be patient, but it will be worth it.
