Here's how one DIYer refinished a mid-century modern tiered table: http://www.interiorfrugalista.com/2015/02/mid-century-modern-tiered-table-makeover.html

Hers was more of a French provincial style to begin with, so instead of two colors, you could just stick with a darker finish all over, like a java or a mahogany stain. Either would work with the Early American style while updating the orange-y wood.

I have the same exact table, wow, I didn't realize it was worth any money, being an antique, my sister gave it to me because she knows I paint and refurbish furniture, cool, now I am undecided as what to really to do with it also!!!

Hello Chye; Your table is from the late 1940's-1950's.

It is a Collectable piece, as many people are buying these pieces to fit in homes from that era.

Personally, I Love how it looks, as it is solid Maple.

Depending on the styles that you have in your home, you can paint this piece pretty much any color that you desire.

I hope this helps you!! Take Care!

The advice of appraisers is to leave it as it is, please don't paint wood.

I vote milk paint! Maybe in a dreamy farmhouse turquoise color? It would look lovely

You can paint it, take top PC off & plug holes. Sand down & put on a darker stain. I have 3 in that style without the top. Just seen one with magazine rack on long side.

Please, don't touch it. It is beautiful how it is!

This table is very much not the style now. So in my opinion it should be honored for what it is and not attempt to make it something that it can not be. It is not quite old enough to be campy, and too good a piece to just not care. So I vote for not doing anything, use it if you need to and like it for what it is.

Agree with Emily comment above. This style/shape is so recognizable that there is little you can do to disguise it. It would be a lot of work in your time, and money spent on materials, to have results, in my opinion that would not meet with expectations.

Either like it, or pass it on to a new home.

I think you should change it completely or leave it just like it is. Just staining or painting I think would take away from the piece but totally changing the piece to something different would be exciting to see. I see a cushioned bench/stool seat with storage or a very nice side table just like it is !

If the hinges are not original, they should be replaced with hinges beneath. Holes filled with dowels before other work proceeds. I personally love Early American maple and look for it first when antiquing. Anything beautiful to one person, me, ain't my husband's bag, as he sez. Suit yourself.
