The easiest way to update if it's fireplace is to paint it. You would have to clean it first with a agent that is specifically for masonry work. Do it yourself stores carry It. Then you can apply whatever paint you would like. Maybe a little difficult to paint rough surfaces so be sure to use the right brush to do the job
You could also whitewash it, which is basically just watering down the paint and then painting, to get a rustic look:
