They make a black paste called Stove Black, and if its totally rusted, you will need to scrape off the rust first. Here's the process. I've done my air tight and also used to do the stove once a year.... keep it looking good.

I must admit I did not like the high temperature paint, it really stinks and had to leave the doors open for a couple days to get rid of the odor.

Take it apart if you can and clean it with vinegar, reassemble.
