Apparently this is becoming a problem for a lot of people with new washers and use liquid laundry detergent. I read a whole discussion about this online. This website should help you fix the problem.

It's not the detergent but the water lingering in the tub. Run a cycle of just hot water and bleach , no clothes . From now on , when its empty, leave the door open .
If you have a front load washer you need to leave the door open when not in use. This will take care of the smell.
add orange peels to the washer and run on low, this is mildew from the water that remains. there are several cleaners that are availabe to remove these odors.
I always leave the door open whether it's a top or front loader - it helps to prevent any mildew from forming. I also take an old rag and wipe up any moisture I see such as the rubber seal around the door of a front loader, etc., etc.
