No problem with plants growing. This is in the middle of the yard with healthy grass.
We had the very same situation and I planted Ajuga which is a tough, spreading ground cover. Just watch that it doesn't invade any grass but if it does, it's easily pulled out. Once a week, I'd check for any tiny bits sprouting up and remove them as they appeared. I have also planted a variety of Sedum and they looked good too. Ajuga has a pretty purple flower as the Summer progresses. Both easily withstand snow and cold conditions, in case you were wondering.
Roses love sunshine. You might consider planting some and putting in nice stepping stones for a path beside them. Mulch the roses and give them a good watering once a week. Hope this helps
I know that all to well, I added bushes and hosts those are heat tolerant and mulch and worked perfect over the years.
