Does someone have advice for finishing a NEW polywood kitchen cart?

I have never worked with this type of surface. I want to hand-paint the cart, but I am concerned about the paint "sticking" to the surface given its man-made nature.

Before applying your topcoat, prime it with a bonding primer like Kilz Adhesion.

Hello! Spray paint made especially for plastic works. You can also paint it with a paint and primer combination like exterior Behr Ultra. Be sure to thoroughly clean your cart and let it dry before applying your paint.

From my experience, PRIMING IS KEY !!! And prime at least twice. Kilz Adhesion ROCKS!!!

Do a light sand with fine steel wool then use a primer and then paint. If you want to stain it lightly sand then use the only shades stain with the polyurethane mixed in.
