You will have to put down seed or sod, but first, you need to determine what is causing the dead spots. You may need a lawn specialist to figure out if it is something as simple as dogs peeing on the grass, clear up to insects killing it.
Fescue is a good grass for shade if shade is your problem.
Call your local county extension service. If you don't know the number, your city hall can help you with that. County extensions can help you determine your problems and even analyze a soil sample.
need to find out what is causing it -- dog urine, too dry/too wet; etc. https://ask.extension.org and send photograph -- they will be for your 'area'
If it's dog pee that's causing the dead grass problem, use dolomitic lime on the spots and water well.
