first of all you will have to remove the carpet and padding; then you can use DIY vinyl plank 'hardwood' in a color/grain that you like; real 'hardwood' is usually not a DIY job!
Good question. I'm looking for the same info myself. We removed carpet from some of our steps, a short stair set, and discovered MDF for the run and what looks like white board for the riser. Hime Depot and Lowes have individual stair treads with bull nose on the front that can be cut to fit the stairs. Depending on the type of wood the cost is around $12.00 per stair run and then the riser will have to be faced in wood as well or at the very least, sanded, primed and painted . There are gaps at the sides of the stairs that will need to be faced with trim. I haven't looked at actual hardwood flooring for each step, though. I hope you get the answers you need.

Easy to do. Cut the wood lengthwise then lay the wood on the stairs. Nail. Use a border that has a lip on it made for stairs for the edge.
