tree or shrub to plant?
Assuming there is no grass, apply a few inches of top soil, grass seed for your location and lighting, starter fertilizer ,and top with peat moss.Keep moist until the seed germinates
In Michigan I did some seeding to my church's on site house, in front. I used Fescue (it had 3 different type, because this area is mostly in the shade from maple trees. Two weeks ago I wet the clay soil enough to make scratches with my 4 pronged cultivator long hand tool, hand sprinkled the 4 lbs of seed, and then hand sprinkled a bag of composted manure on top. Then I only watered it every other day. I put a 'two fist wide plug of grass' from my own yard at the end of the downspouts-to slow down the rain as it left the downspout. Today I see baby grass growing. It is as easy as that. You must water it every day in the sun, or even two times a day if it is dry. Ask the place where you buy the seed for the recommendation in your zone.
Choose a shade a mix of grass seeds designed for shade. Loosen the soil, tilling in some fertilizer. I find that grass does better if you then water the fertilized soil and let it set a day or two to dry before raking in the grass seeds -- the wait is so the fertilizer begins to break down and is less likely to "burn" the seed.
