Why is the bark peeling off my kousa dogwood?

This tree is about 25 years old and I've never seen it do this before. This looks like deer damage to me (from bucks rubbing off the velvet), but since this is right up against the house I just don't know. Thoughts?

From what I can see, it looks like it is shedding. I would fertilize & put some trunk wrap on it for now. I bought mine on Amazon & wrapped a smoke tree for several months. It is doing much better. I think deer did damage to mine. I did get some black like tar to paint on tree injuries & painted the trunk of my tree.
it is just shedding its bark. Crape myrtles do this as well. It's fine!
It supposed to shed its bark. It means it is healthy and has entered a mature stage in it' life.
