Dig down a bit where each stone will be placed and tamp in an inch or so of bank sand from the building supply store - broken bags are usually available at a reduced price. Use more sand to adjust under the stones to level and stabilize -enjoy your path!
And if your soil is very clay you can sometimes skip the sand step. I've done it a few times with success.
Unless you want to constantly re-position them, Pour a layer of cement and then place your stones in it.
Easiest way is to set each stone beside its new location and take out the sod in the general size and shape of the stone. Try the stone in the hole and adjust, adding pieces of sod back in or removing more. I will look great for a couple of years.
This has been my plan of attack in my front yard, filling spaces between the stones with quick spreading low growing plants. Found a sedum that seems to love it there. This isn't the main walkway, just a path around the house so I don't care if it moves around some with the seasons as long as I can pass the mower over it.
You can do mosaic style- http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/walkways-paths/mosaic-walkway-25291938
