Turn the coffee table over and put a panel of fabric that goes with your décor over the openings. If need be, and you can't get a panel to fit, stain quarter round to match the table to cover the bare wood the drawers covered and put the fabric panel on that to attach it.
I would cut a piece of wood to fit the space. Paint or stain it and put a handle on it. No one has to know it's not the actual drawer.
They have these shallow and deep canvas topless cubes at the Dollar Tree in brown and beige, they might fit, or you might check out there many colored plastic/vinyl trays.... my fav color is the aqua.

or you could just find boxes and cover them in fabric or paper using spray adhesive or rubber cement.
You could use those wicker baskets to fill the space
That's a possibility too. I would want to find handles appropriate to the 1960's.
