It depends on what material you would use.

If it were me, I wouldn't do it. How are you going to finish off the edges? Going to look funky and chances are it will fail in the long run. Then you spent all that money and have to redo again . . .
I would not attempt it.
No! The weight of the new over the old can compromise the paper on the drywall and peel it right off. Also the new needs a smooth solid surface to adhere. It's a shortcut no one should take.
