Tomatoes split if they receive a lot of water at once, especially after a dry period. If you're expecting quite a bit of rain and you haven't been watering regularly, it's a good idea to pick any tomatoes that are nearing maturity and let them ripen indoors.

Usually it is too much water / rain that makes them split.
I agree with the two above. It affects the mini tomatoes like cherry tomatoes first, as they have more water in them.
Many fruits split due to too much water. It's difficult to tell without knowing the situation and seeing them.
Hi Wanda, I agree with the above comments. Too much water will split tomatoes. That being said, please don't stop watering your tomato plants. I water my garden for fifteen minutes every morning and my vegetables are doing great. Maybe water as frequently but not as much water every time. Good luck.
Usually it's either been over-watered or it wasn't sufficiently shaded by the leaves.
