Do you have any skills as a wood worker? Our handyman (genius level, so you won't find his equal) built us a set of shelves in the "barn" AKA the den with fourteen inches between shelves. We don't store paint cans, but we store many other things.
I see the graffiti artists toting there's around in plastic crates, which can also be hung on the wall or put on shelves, or tucked under work bench.
I used mine to hang my necklaces and bracelets on them.
Where can I purchase a kiln dry pine pole about 15 Feet long and turned to a 8" dia
you didnt say why it wouldnt work.so not sure what you need.but you might look into automotive storage like used to store tools & small items.
