What is the best way to remove enamel paint from kitchen cabinets?
I painted kitchen walls white but painted cabinets red about 10 yrs ago, now want to remove red paint.
Remove doors and drawers (mark them so you will know what goes where). Remove hardware. Clean all surfaces using a cleaner like TSP to remove grease, dirt build-up, etc. Lightly sand all surfaces to remove any shiny surfaces. Prime with a good quality primer. Paint with a good quality kitchen and bath paint....Will probably take 2-3 coats for good coverage. Allow to dry completely between coats.
There are several paint choices for kitchen cabinets like enamal paint, alkyd and chalk paint. Chalk paint will give you a more chalky/matted finish, but requires no sanding or priming. And it may need a water based sealant. The other paints works best when you sand the cabinets down and then use a good primer like Kilz Adhesion or something similar. You don't necessarily need to do a sealant if you use a good latex paint or one made specifically for cabinets. You want to take off all of the doors (but label them so you know where they go back) and take out all drawers. To paint drawers and cabinets, it works best to work in your basement or garage and lay them on old boxes so they are off the ground while you paint. There is a pic below of when I painted my basement cabinets this way. Here are some links of people who did it both ways:
