A friend of mine had a similar closet and she removed the doors and hung a curtain rod up, strung curtains and used tie backs. Then she put the doors back on which she had covered with mirror tiles. It looked awesome.

Perhaps put a Panel of Wallpaper in the Centre of Each Door surrounded with a Border or Frame. Or, Form a Cross, from Corner to Corner on each Door and paint each section 4 shades of the same colour on each door.
There are some low cost barn door projects that would really dress it up. Or how about no doors at all?
I'm not sure how much clearance you have with the door which opens behind the first one, but how about flat trim, or cutting out a panel from each door and inserting a frosted glass panel (could be frosted with cling film or specialty paint)? You could also put flat overlays on the glass. Alternatively you could put a mirror. You don't need to put thick moulding to hold in the glass, just flat "swivel" clips (similar to the picture below).

Take out the current handle holds, Make the holes they leave bigger, carefully, and paint around them?
Spray paint the handles and add decorative trim and here's a few photo to help with your ez project.
Barn doors or distressed wooden louver doors
Take the doors off and hang beautiful curtains. That's what I did, having access to the whole closet and not just one side is the one of the best decisions I've made.
