i have some ground covers that I killed with weed killer, then switched to a ecofriendly method. I buy bags of mulch on sale and place the whole bags on top of what I want to kill. A few weeks later when I'm sure it's dead, I open the bags and spread the mulch. I've also laid down plastic sheeting (for low growing plants) to smother them. Sometimes pinning them down with plant or tent pins, or rocks, particularly the edges of the sheet and covering it with stones. Hope this helps.
