While fall and spring are the ideal times to transplant roses, you can (if necessary) transplant them at any time of the year. I've transplanted roses on New Year's Day, after an ice storm (we were moving from a rental, and wanted to take our roses with us), and over Memorial Day weekend (another move). I've also transplanted during the heat of the summer (following the death of a fellow rose grower and the sale of her property to a non-rose-lover). Given lots of TLC, the roses all lived, so it can be done, but fall and spring are the best times.

As roses are sensitive to shock, moving them while dormant (in late winter or early spring) is generally recommended. When transplanting rose bushes in spring, wait until all threat of frost or freezing weather has passed. The soil should also be relatively warm and manageable.Mar 16, 2015
